Don’t Wait! Make Your New Year’s Resolutions TODAY!

Dumbbell reverse lunge and press for strong and sexy back, shoulders, legs and butt!

With the New Year quickly approaching, you may be thinking of your New Year’s Resolutions. I’m sure that weight loss or improved health and fitness is at the top of your list as it may have been each and every year for the past few years. How has that been working for you?

Have you achieved your health and fitness goals in the past? Have you lost weight, increased strength and mobility while getting leaner and in better shape? If not, why not? Is it an issue of sticking to a fitness plan for more than a few weeks or months? Is it knowing what to do when you go to the gym? Is it an issue of knowing what to eat, how much or when?

If your New Year’s Resolution is to make changes this year, do you have a plan in place to make this happen? Are you going to stick with it this time? Are you really going to make 2012 your best year ever?

These are the questions you should be asking yourself.

If you’re unsure of what to do and need help, seek professional assistance. When you need advice on your taxes, do you hire an accountant? When you need legal information, do you hire an attorney? If you’re sick or in need of emergency care, do you seek the help of a doctor? Then why wouldn’t you do the same with your health and fitness needs?

Hiring a professional coaching and fitness program like Underground Fitness Revolution will help you stay accountable and motivated while providing you with a structured training program and nutritional guidelines and meals to help you achieve your weight loss and fitness goals.

UFR Girls Go Heavy

Me Back Squatting 135 lbs. I added weight after this and set my first PR at 145lbs.

Recently, I have developed a sort of obsession with strength training and deadlifts. I have been following a few of my personal fitness icons and love watching them reach new PR’s.

Last week, I asked Nate if I could start using the bar during my workouts with the goal to get strong and lift heavy. Last Friday, I benched the bar for the first time. By the bar, I mean just the bar! Lifting a simple 45lb bar alone was EMPOWERING enough.

By the next morning (Christmas Eve) I was begging him to take me to the gym and let me set my first PR’s (Personal Records) so that I could find my one-repetition max and base my weight training from the results. I wanted to know just how strong I was and be able to set new strength goals for 2012.

So off to the gym we went! I did the normal 5-minute tissue quality and mobility warm-up that we use before every workout and got more nervous by the second. We started out light of course with merely just the bar. The same bar I had just lifted for the first time the day before. It was cake! We added weight until I finally reached my back squat max of 145lbs. It was brutal! I wasn’t comfortable with the bar yet and held it in a spot where it left bruises on my shoulders and the back of my neck. Oddly enough I was thankful for these bruises when I trained the following Monday simply because it reminded me where NOT to sit the bar.

By the time I reached my maximum back squat weight, I was super pumped. I couldn’t wait to move to the next exercise and test the next set of muscles. Front squatting was even more difficult since I wasn’t comfortable with the bar, but the heavier the weight got the more proud I became of myself. I maxed out front squats at 115 lbs. My legs have always been the “Power – House” section of my body.

My First PR! Doing what I love- Deadlifting!! 185 lbs Baby!

But there is serious improvement needed for my upper body strength which I was already aware of since I still can’t master a full push-up or unassisted pull-up. So you can imagine I wasn’t as stoked about the bench pressing part. I surprised myself a little when I maxed out at 65 lbs on the bench. I didn’t think I would bench anything over 55lbs. My first goal for the bench is to press 110lbs, so you can bet I will be training hard the next 12 weeks to increase upper body strength.

Once we finished with the bench and I saw Nate setting up the trap bar, I swear a whole new adrenaline rush began. I am OBSESSED with deadlifts. I love the empowering feeling of using every muscle you have to lift something HEAVY straight off the ground. This is one of those exercises I want to dominate. My favorite Girl Gone Strong and Beautiful Badass, Nia Shanks set a remarkable PR in August 2011. She weighed in at 126 lbs and deadlifted 330lbs!!! That is INSPIRATION right there! I love following her and the other Girls Gone Strong. They are an awesome group and all work very hard to reach new goals continuously.

My Current PR’s:

Back Squat: 145lbs.

Front Squat: 115lbs.

Bench Press: 65lbs.

Trap Bar DEADLIFT: 185lbs

Current Goals (By December 2012):

Back Squat: 185lbs

Front Squat: 155lbs

Bench: 105lbs

Trap Bar DEADLIFT: 225lbs

I am presently training 3 days a week with a short high-intensity metabolic cardio session on at least one of my days off (Density Training, Sprints, Jump Rope, Shuttles/Back Shuttles, etc.). Starting in January I will be training 4-5 days a week. I will test my PR’s again in 13 weeks when I finish my current training program. I am tracking all of my weights so that I can continue to increase weight as needed during workouts for onward progression in reaching my strength goals for the year.

With all of that being said, let me shed some back story. I started training at Underground Fitness Revolution in July and have never strength trained before. I have lost over 21 lbs and continue to decrease body fat while increasing muscle. I want to be STRONG, lean, and sexy! I am 26 and feel that there is no reason why I shouldn’t be completely comfortable in my own skin. I give my training my ALL and have a totally new mindset than I did when I first started training. Initially I just wanted to lose weight. Now I want to be in the BEST shape of my life and eventually compete in weightlifting competitions. I know with the amazing support I get from UFR members and the outstanding level of training from Nate, I will do nothing short of succeed.

Plus, I have some in-house healthy competition from someone who is just as competitive as I am! This is going to be a GREAT year!

Get Healthy! Get Fit! Be Fabulous!
